Aidan Curran

OWNER/PERFORMANCE COACH

My name is Aidan and I am the founder and coach of 90 Minutes Fitness. Born and raised in Waterford, Ireland, I now live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My passion for football has taken me all over the world from America to Germany, and these experiences have given me a unique insight into not only football, but life too.

My qualifications include:

My Personal Story

My story began in a little village in Waterford, Ireland. Growing up, I was obsessed with football. My childhood was spent playing the game, in school, at home, and with my club. From an early age, I knew I wanted football to be a huge part of my life. But as is the case with a lot of younger players, I was constantly overlooked.

However, I didn't let this stop me. I worked harder, thought smarter, and came up with different ways to succeed. When I was 17, I decided I wanted to reach the highest level I could, no matter what it would take. From the ages of 17-19, I underwent two hip operations, but again this didn't stop me.

I knew I had to get out of Waterford if I ever wanted to have a chance, so I attended college at University College Dublin, which is known for having an excellent football setup. It wasn't all plain sailing. I failed the first trials, being told I wasn't good enough. Again, I went away and worked hard, playing for a local side. I then trained with UCD over the following summer, travelling a 3 hour round trip, 3 times a week to try and earn my place. Fast forward 2 years, and I was lifting a trophy as UCD captain...

My 3 years of college were spent in the gym and training, with consistency and sacrifice being the keys.

It all paid off when I accepted a full soccer scholarship to the United States, to attend University of Findlay, Ohio. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Playing football every day, travelling, and meeting new people is something I will never forget.

After the US, I had a brief spell in Germany. This was always a goal of mine since I trialled there professionally before I went to the US. I simply turned up at a professional German club one morning and asked to train. If you don't ask you will never get!

After that, I returned to Ireland where I spent the next two years. During this time, I also attended a professional showcase in Latvia, which again was an eye opener into the professional world of football. Players were there from all over the world fighting for contracts that would barely cover week to week expenses, but you could see the passion and determination in each of them. Again, it made me realise what a cut throat industry football is.

After leaving Ireland, my next stop was Edinburgh, Scotland, where I played and lived for two years with my wife (who I met during my time in America). An Irish and American couple living in Scotland...We had to explain that one quite a few times!

In January 2021, we moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I am now expanding 90 Minutes Fitness along with seeking out the next opportunity in my football career. 

Creation Of 90 Minutes Fitness

Fitness has always been a passion of mine. Even as young boy, I was reading books on speed and agility and creating my own drills to try at home. It was while in America, that this passion really took off. However, as many footballers who play in America will tell you, you are treated like an American football player. You lift big, and you are expected to eat big, thus putting on weight.

This is not how footballers should train. It was while in Latvia that I realised I was doing it all wrong. Although I looked good aesthetically, it was not benefiting my performance on the pitch. As the opposing winger out sprinted me time after time, it made me regret all those hours working on my biceps rather than on things that would matter, such as agility, speed, or technique. 

So many footballers fall into the trap of doing bodybuilding style workouts. Often with these workouts, they will make you stiff and rigid, and make you slower and more injury prone. 

That is what happened to me.

From that moment on, I completely changed my routine. I focused more on my mobility and developing strength relative to my bodyweight. I ditched the bodybuilding exercises, cut down on the gym work, and did more on the pitch instead. This led to me becoming lighter but more stable, less injury prone, fitter, faster, and stronger. I also looked more like a footballer.

I started 90 Minutes Fitness in August 2018 to help players avoid the mistakes that I made. My sole aim at the beginning was to provide quality content and workouts that players could do. At first, my posts were only getting 20 likes at most. But no matter what, I was determined to help players, no matter how low in volume. If I could even impact one player, then that was my job done. Over time, the page grew and grew, and the feedback was encouraging. Players were really enjoying the simplistic nature of my posts. I always try and think of questions I had as a young player, and then try and answer them or provide value through my content.

As of now, we are at 23,000 followers, with two ebooks available for download, and a podcast which is gaining traction each and every week. I am determined to impact as many players around the world as possible, and grow 90 Minutes Fitness to be the number one resource for football specific fitness in the world.

I am always happy to help anybody with ambition. Life is there to be lived and we need to go after what truly makes us feel alive. Whatever that may be, I hope you have found it, or in the process of finding it, and using every day to turns those dreams into reality.
